I’d six years in an emergency room, with two tours as an Army medic before that, but in this new world I was a nobody until a mercenary captain put me on his roster and took me to a war where somewhere in the woods, there’s a monster carving travelers into a Working that won’t let them die. The Order of Witch Hunters is on his trail, but the Order’s cleansing method is fire, and they’re more than happy to take whole villages if they need to.

The Company, though, is keeping me close. And three of them are keeping me closer than the others. The Warrior calls me hers in front of the whole company, and breaks fingers when men forget it. The Adept watched me work and has since tracked every rival with a scholar’s thoroughness. The Scout barely speaks to me, but those who get too close have a way of turning up amongst the bodies.

The Chantry wants me registered. The Colleges want me examined. And the Hunters just want to know how well I burn.

Let them argue. Every wound I close puts me further out of reach, and the three women who’ve claimed me will make sure nobody gets close enough to do damage.
